WORDS FROM WELLESLEY

Wellesley Wilson

WELCOME

And miles to go before I sleep. The iconic line from Robert Frost's early 20th century poem, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," feels most appropriate as we anticipate winter break, knowing there is often much to do before this period of rest. Rest, balance, and mindfulness are ever-present in the minds of the faculty as we desire to lift up the whole girl. Yes, we want our students to engage in deep and rigorous learning, but we want to teach them to do so in a way that is healthy and sustainable. We are confronting these issues head on with the help of our faculty and student Balance Committees and our 5th through 9th grade life balance classes. Additionally, we've received in-person guidance from Dave Mochel, chief executive officer at Applied Attention, who, for the past two years, has worked closely with our students and faculty on mindfulness. You may enjoy this clip from Dave's TEDx talk that was shown to our full faculty in advance of his arrival last year. By asking the question, "What are you practicing?," Dave compels us to consider if we have aligned "what matters most with the time and energy we have."

On the topic of timing, I hope the admission and financial aid application deadline of January 7, 2019, is on your calendar. Once you have submitted your admission application, you will be able to schedule the admission interview. Interview times are filling quickly, and I strongly encourage you to apply and schedule your interview as soon as possible.

Lastly, we continue to celebrate the November 5 announcement from our Board of Trustees naming Jess Hill as our seventh Head of School, effective immediately. I invite you to read Mrs. Hill's message to the community as we are thrilled to have her leading Harpeth Hall.

While the end of the calendar year can be filled with "to-dos" and "to-sees," I hope you will have meaningful time with family and friends and make time to rest well.

My warmest wishes to you,

Wellesley L. Wilson

Director of Admission and Financial Aid
