After graduating from Eastern Michigan University with a BFA in 1975, Martha moved to New Orleans, Louisiana where she began an apprenticeship in woodworking. After moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 1985, she began working as a scenic artist and
woodworker in film and video.
She established her own woodworking business in 1990, and created custom furniture until 2016, when she left her business to work on her own art in her home studio. Working mostly in oils doing representational art, Martha has shifted gears and now works in acrylics doing abstract images, and most recently, sculpture.
The studio also houses the "Avant Garage”, an annual gallery exhibit held each November, which includes Martha’s work and the work of other local artists.
