Winterim Reflections from Students

Liza Nelle Meltesen, 10th grade

Hello, my name is Liza Nelle. At Harpeth Hall, the athletic and leadership programs are highlights of my experience. Even though I love my classes and teachers, I find that my time on the fields and with my classmates is what makes the Harpeth Hall experience powerful. I participated in many middle school sports and am currently a member on the cross country, lacrosse, and bowling teams. I have also been involved in student committees throughout my time at Harpeth Hall.

1. What Winterim class are you most excited for this year? Why?

I am most looking forward to the Not Your Grandma's Quilt class. The class stood out because I knew I would enjoy the creativity and hands on projects that were included. I can not wait to grow my sewing skills and even bring home some of my work.

2. What Winterim experience from last year surprised you or introduced you to something new? What did you learn?

Last year in my calligraphy class, I learned not only how to do calligraphy with pens, brushes, or nibs but also was exposed to calligraphy in and throughout history. The class took a field trip to Vanderbilt's Special Collections Library and got to see examples of everything we learned.

3. How would you describe the benefits of the Winterim program? How has it impacted you?

I believe that there are many benefits to the Winterim experience. From pursuing something you are considering for a career to taking classes outside of your immediate interests, Winterim opens up so many opportunities for your future. I have personally found that Winterim allowed me to find new passions and grow closer with my peers during the special community times.

Charlotte Hagood, 12th grade

Hello, my name is Charlotte. I came to Harpeth Hall in 5th grade. I knew no one, but I was able to make friends so quickly due to different bonding activities and the sheer kindness of the Harpeth Hall community overall! In middle school, I experimented a lot with different sports and activities on Harpeth Hall's athletic teams, which was a great way for me to make friends and learn more about myself. Now, I dance competitively at an outside studio almost every day after school. Though I am not involved in sports, I find other ways to be involved with the school during the day through different facets such as fashion club, founding and leading Harpeth Hall's new dance club, and being an ambassador!

1. What Winterim experience from last year surprised you or introduced you to something new? What did you learn?

Last year, I spent my Winterim training with the pre-professional dancers from the Paris Marais Dance School in Paris. My classes were taught solely in French, and I trained in numerous styles for 8 hours each day. Although I was very nervous at the beginning of Winterim, my experiences in Paris ended up having a life changing impact on me. Not only did I improve in my dance and French skills, but I created friendships and memories that will last with me throughout my entire life.

2. How would you describe the benefits of the Winterim program? How has it impacted you?

Each year, I come to school after Winterim feeling like a changed woman. No matter how I spent the three weeks away from school, I return to Harpeth Hall with a broader knowledge of my self-identity as well as a heightened appreciation of the world around me. My Winterim experiences have been some of the most memorable of my years in high school, and the benefits I have gained will undoubtedly stay with me throughout the rest of my life.

Lucy Davis, 10th grade

Hi, I'm Lucy. At Harpeth Hall, I am involved in cross country and mock trial. My favorite aspect of student life is the community of my friends, classmates, and teachers! I especially love the sophomore pod and seeing everyone in between classes.

1. What Winterim Class are you most looking forward to? Why? What do you expect to learn in that class?

I am most looking forward to my How to Find a STUD and Other Household Skills class!! I am excited to learn skills like how to change a tire, how to budget, and how to remove stains! I have heard so many great things about the class and how beneficial it is.

2. What Winterim experience from last year surprised you or introduced you to something new? What did you learn?

A Winterim experience that surprised me last year was my Marine Biology class. I was pleasantly surprised at how much information regarding marine life that I learned and how fun dissecting organisms was! I learned about different techniques on dealing with wildlife as well as habitats in the ocean.

3. How would you describe the benefits of the Winterim program? How has it impacted you?

Winterim is the best ever! It provides a nice break from normal classes to explore other topics you are interested in. There are many benefits. Bonding with girls in another grade, broadening your global knowledge, and seeking future career opportunities are just a few.
