The Global Demand for Preventative Eye Care Measures

by Clara M. Class 0f 2021

My capstone project explored the global demand for preventative eye care measured and focused specifically on the effects glaucoma. Glaucoma is a treatable disease characterized by the degeneration of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and damage to the optic nerve. It is primarily asymptomatic and leads to irreversible vision loss and blindness if left untreated. I learned about how different countries like Rwanda and India have started programs to increase clinical eye care measures and I discovered statistics about how blindness hinders quality of life and puts economic strain on a country. As a final project, I went to Room in the Inn and scanned about 40 men for glaucoma using the TonoPen, a handheld tonometer that measures intraocular pressure and can determine if a patient is at high risk for developing -- or may already have -- glaucoma. I referred positive cases to Neighborhood Health, a free clinic near Room in the Inn, and scheduled two men to get glasses at Primary Eye Care in Brentwood.
