First Lego League Robotics Club

With an increased focus on engineering in the Middle School,  we began competing in FIRST LEGO League, the middle school robotics competition. This competition and corresponding club focuses on applying coding, engineering design, and teamwork to accomplish missions using the LEGO Mindstorm EV3 robots.  Teams also identify and solve a problem concerning the Lego League theme for the year.  Previous year's themes have included how to be an animal ally, solving the world's trash problems and human exploration of space.  The competitive team is open to 7th and 8th grade students in the Fall while a non-competitive team is open to 5th and 6th graders in the Spring.

In the four years we have participated, Harpeth Hall has stood out at both the regional and state level, earning awards each time we have competed. Many of the students who competed in the first year of our robotics team in the middle school continued to have interest in programming and robotics once they enter high school, which has led to the creation of a Robotics Club and a Coding Club in the high school.
