For my SEEK project, I focused on graffiti and street art. My goal was to learn about different styles and types of street art, learn and practice skills for a variety of graffiti techniques, and ultimately execute a few pieces that could positively impact my community. To do this, I explored graffiti’s origins as an ancient art form, different styles of graffiti, opposing viewpoints, graffiti removal, and all the supplies and planning I would need to complete my project. For my final product, I made a Banksy-inspired stencil portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat, a well-known graffiti artist, stickers for each of the SEEK scholars, and a reproducible stamp. I also created a graffiti piece inspired by Keith Haring on the back of my fence that says “Vote” to encourage the people in my neighborhood to exercise their right to vote this election year. During the process of SEEK, I deepened my knowledge of the purpose of graffiti and relied on the inspiration I had collected throughout my research to complete my products. |
