For my SEEK project I researched the formation, detection, and aftermath of tornadoes. Since I was 4 years old, I have been fascinated by tornadoes and my goal was to create an engaging way for 5th and 6th grade students to learn about the science behind tornadoes. For my research, I focused on the main conditions and factors needed for a tornado to form, the classification of tornadoes, how radars work and disaster relief organizations that help with tornado relief. I also learned about stop motion and video editing in preparation for my product. For my final product, I made a stop-motion video about a fictional tornado passing through a town in Kansas. The video shows and explains how a tornado forms and shows its journey through the town of Canton, Kansas. In order to engage my target audience, I made the majority of my model town out of Legos, and broke them apart as the tornado tore through the town. I used a green screen to add a realistic backdrop, took 246 images, and spent around 7 hours editing my video. The result is an engaging 2 and ½ minute video that a teacher could use as part of a unit on weather. Through SEEK, I learned the science behind tornadoes and how to edit a stop motion video, while furthering my organization and time management skills.
