The Effects of Social Media and the Internet on Mental Health
Elizabeth Read

Lilly Anne Thompson '25

Like most of my peers I often hear people joke about being addicted to their phones. After hearing it so many times, I wondered if people could actually become addicted to their phones or other technology. My SEEK project focused on internet and social media addictions. I researched the effects of social media on mental health, signs and symptoms of an addiction to social media or the internet, the most common causes of an addiction, and ways to prevent an addiction to social media. I created a quiz that assesses the effects of social media and how the internet can negatively impact a person’s mental health. Using my research, I created a life balance lesson plan that highlights the main points of my research and educates students on how to healthily use social media. My lesson plan is already being used in some life balance classes in the middle school!
