Stitching Through Time: Designing 1950s Fashion
Elizabeth Read

Virginia Harper Bolin '29

I researched 1950s fashion, as well as the creative process behind designing and sewing a dress. My goal was to understand the fashion style in the 50’s to create a dress that represents the decade's style. To do this, I took inspiration from old movies and family history, especially my great grandmother. I researched the historical events impacting the era’s designs, and then learned how to sew and create my own dress. For my final project, I designed a collection of 6 dresses and sewed a small-scale dress that accurately depicts the fashion standards of the 50s. From this project, I have a deeper understanding of how people lived 70 years ago, as well as how to go through the fashion design process.
