Spread Your Branches: Discovering and Writing Poetry
Elizabeth Read

Mary Kidd Lindsey '27

I researched how to write many different kinds of poems, and I read famous examples of them. I reviewed the important basics of poetry and learned how to create a cohesive book of poems. As a result of my research, I was inspired to write original poems in the various types I researched, including sonnets, haikus, and limericks. I compiled these poems into a book called “Spread Your Branches”, named after my favorite poem. Alongside those poems, I included an author’s statement about my growth and thought process throughout SEEK. I developed new knowledge on how to write several advanced poems, and I practiced my time management skills.
