I researched the history and storytelling behind the art of quilting in order to sew my own quilt. I learned about how quilting came to America, its history in the United States, different types of quilts, and the way that women have used quilting as a platform for social change. In addition, a large part of my research was on telling stories through quilting. I learned that each pattern, image, or color can represent a special person, event, or tradition, and when combined, they tell a beautiful story. For my final product, I created a pieced quilt using fabrics from old clothes that my relatives gave to me, such as a shirt from my grandmother and a dress from my sister. I arranged the quilt pieces in diagonal rows and alternated each unique fabric with denim from old jeans.
