Opposites: Writing a Book of Poetry
Elizabeth Read

Carlisle Gambill '27

I learned about the fundamentals of poetry. I researched the lives and poetry styles of several poets including Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, and Sarah Kay. I spent time figuring out the purposes of poetry and the goals that I wanted to accomplish when writing poetry. Using my research, I wrote and edited a book of poetry called “Opposites.” I wrote a poem for each pair of opposites in my book including, sweet and sour, light and dark, start and end, and unfamiliar and comforting. Through SEEK, I learned the importance of time management and being creative and expressive, while creating a book of diverse, yet similarly themed poems.
