“Magenta”: Writing a Short Story
Elizabeth Read

Louisa Wang '27

I researched mental health, specifically in young girls, focusing on body image, perfectionism, stereotypes, and how literature or movies can affect them. Next, I learned about the process of writing a short story. Using my research, I wrote a short story targeted towards teens, based on girls' inner struggles as they grow up. Because part of my research was on Disney Princesses, and how they can sometimes make girls believe that they must act or look a certain way, I wrote my short story about two sister princesses, who the reader can actually relate to. Because of all the hard work I completed during this process, I have developed a better understanding of stereotypes and ideas about beauty, and I have gained a broader perspective of different aspects of mental health, such as body image, perfectionism, and self perception.
