Eco-Friendly Design: Creating an Upcycled Gown
Elizabeth Read

Madeline Graf '26

For my SEEK project, I learned about the effects of clothing production on the environment. Through my research, I learned the harmful effects that non-eco friendly clothing can have on the Earth and I gained a new awareness of the environmental effects of fast fashion. One fact that particularly surprised me was that cotton, which is often thought of as eco-friendly, actually uses harmful pesticides and an incredible amount of water. For my product, I learned sewing techniques and I planned, sketched, and created a gown made from an old curtain and a tablecloth. My goal was to create a beautiful, wearable garment that provides a purpose for already-used materials that would have been discarded otherwise.
