My SEEK project was inspired by my curiosity and interest in exploring current events. I wanted to show middle school students the complexity and importance of world events and the news. My goal was to design a template for a newsletter with information about current events, for example the environment, pop culture, and politics and government, as well as controversial topics. My hope was that this could be used in the future as a tool for civic education in the middle school. My research focused on the process and resources needed for writing, editing, and designing a newsletter. I discovered a variety of news sources with different media types including articles, videos, and podcasts, as well as tools to help with reliability and political bias. I also learned a few basics of digital design. After developing a prototype, I shared a draft of my newsletter with a 5th grade class. Seeing my product from the view of my target audience helped me gain a fresh perspective and new ideas to work with. Their detailed, constructive feedback about what they enjoyed as well as their confusions was one of the most useful parts of my editing process. My final product is a short, four-page newsletter designed on Canva that a student group like the Civic Education Student Board in the middle school could use as a guide to create more editions of a middle school newsletter in the future to keep students informed about current events. Despite facing challenges during my SEEK journey, I learned the importance of time management, communication, and feedback.
