My goal was to create an engaging way to teach middle schoolers about the culture and history behind woven cloth in Africa. For my research, I focused on how certain types of cloth and weavings are created. I also learned how modern day demands such as quicker production and cheaper selling practices are causing this type of art to slowly dwindle as people lose interest in creating these pieces. As my final product, I drafted a storyboard and wrote a script in order to create a video explaining African textiles. I created this video for a 5th or 6th grader. In the video, I highlighted the influence of trading and the economy on the style and materials textiles are made with. For example, many traditional clothes in Africa are very similar to clothing worn by old European traders. Additionally, I included a timelapse of myself weaving and I compared the amount of time that took to how much time a professional textile worker would take to weave an entire piece. Through SEEK, I deepened my knowledge of woven arts while also learning life-skills like time management and communication.
