 | Convocation Celebrates Opening of School 8/18/2010 The Harpeth Hall community ushered in the 145-year legacy of excellence in the education of young women with a spirited entrance by the Class of 2011 on Wednesday, August 18. Clad in neon bright colors over their dress uniforms, the Class of 2011 chose “Neon 11: Life in Techno Color” as its theme for the year and danced into the auditorium to techno music.

 Harpeth Hall To Create STEM Center 6/10/2010 The Edward E. Ford Foundation has just announced that Harpeth Hall has been awarded a prestigious Leadership Grant from the Foundation. The $250,000 matching grant will enable Harpeth Hall to have a transformative impact on the educational opportunities for girls by establishing The Center for STEM Education for Girls to increase participation by girls in science, technology, engineering, and math studies in high school and college and to encourage them to aspire to STEM careers.

  | Graduation Celebrates Class of 2010 5/25/2010 Under sunny blue skies, the class of 2010 took its final walk across Souby Lawn on a warm evening on May 24th for the 59th commencement ceremony at The Harpeth Hall School. Ninety-two seniors in elegant white dresses signaled the culmination of years of dedication to learning, exploration, growth…and the journey on to college. The Class of 2010 will attend 49 different colleges and universities from coast to coast and abroad this fall.

  | Celebrating 8th Grade Honor Day 5/24/2010 The 41st class to receive its 8th grade certificates in the Daugh W. Smith Middle School was honored on Monday, May 24 at the Honor Day ceremony held in the Frances Bond Davis Theatre.

 Warm Skies Usher in Step Singing 5/23/2010 Under blue skies, the Class of 2010 and Class of 2011 strolled down Souby Lawn in front of the Ann Scott Carell Library portico for the 59th annual “Step Singing” ceremony. Step Singing, begun at Ward-Belmont Preparatory School, was brought to Harpeth Hall along with other traditions in an effort to maintain unbroken continuity between the two schools. Ward-Belmont girls sang a cappella songs on the steps in front of the academic building – hence, Step Singing.

 SEEK Fellows Honored 4/28/2010 Tennessee Commissioner of Human Services Gina Lodge presented medals to twenty-nine SEEK Fellows at an all-school assembly on April 29.

  | Honoring Outstanding Faculty 4/21/2010
One of the most inspiring annual assemblies is the Assembly Honoring Faculty, which was held Tuesday, April 20. Students gathered in the Frances Bond Davis Theatre to celebrate faculty and staff members who have retired, are marking anniversaries for years of service and who received honors for “excellence in teaching.”
Armistead Lemon, Stephanie Hamilton, and Polly Linden, three talented Harpeth Hall teachers, were honored for excellence in teaching and received the Heath Jones Prize for the Promise of Excellence in Teaching, the Lulu Hampton Owen Chair for Excellence in Teaching, and the Hofstead Chair in Math and Sciences, respectively.

  | First Spirit of Service Award Winner Honored 4/1/2010 Harpeth Hall alumna Liz Shayne, class of 1982, is the first recipient of the Harpeth Hall Spirit of Service Award. Ms. Shayne was honored at an all-school assembly on March 29. For more than a decade, Liz Shayne has been “building stronger girls” as the motto states at the Rosie’s Girls Summer Program in Vermont that she founded. Rosie’s Girls is an exploration day camp that inspires girls who learn skilled trades and technical fields, balanced with arts activities and games, while helping girls find their own strength, power and confidence. During the three-week camp, the girls are exposed to a wide range of non-traditional career opportunities such as welding, electric wiring, carpentry, auto repair and even fire fighting.

  Students Take First in JETS Competition 2/26/2010 A team of Harpeth Hall freshmen and sophomores competed in its first JETS competition at Vanderbilt University on Feb. 26 and took first place inthe 9/10 division. JETS, the Junior Engineering Technical Society, hosts a competition every year for high school students focusing on tackling major global challenges having to do with engineering.
